Hermann Clinic Fund Drive

Members of the Hermann Area District Hospital Fund Development Committee are seen presenting a check for $60,000 to Dale Ridder, President of the Board of Directors to help the fund drive for a new primary care clinic in Hermann (see bottom of article.) The Fund Development Committee is comprised of employees that donate back to the hospital to assist with projects to improve the hospital. The Committee challenges, fellow employees, the Board of Directors, and community members to participate in the fund drive.
For many years there were two independent medical clinics in town, Hermann Medical Arts on Sixth Street and Southwest Medical Associates on Wein Street across from the hospital. Both clinics became part of the hospital in 2004 and 2006 due to increasing difficulty in retaining and recruiting medical providers. Both clinics were built soon after the hospital opened in 1967. Hermann Medical Arts was part of a FEMA buyout in 2020 and Southwest Medical Associates at 3,250 square foot cannot accommodate all the medical providers, especially as medicine has changed in the last 50 years. The Board of Directors plans to build a state of the art clinic at over 9,000 square feet. The community is encouraged to get behind this effort to keep needed medical services in our area.
The new clinic is not only needed for additional clinic space but to encourage local residents to receive more care locally. The hospital and clinic are dependent on utilization to keep these services available and are making every effort to keep everyone safe during this pandemic including offering COVID-19 testing as well as COVID-19 vaccinations. As technology changes, the clinic and hospital are striving to keep up, however Medicare reimbursement is not keeping pace with the needs. Medicare reimbursement is less for rural healthcare than it is for our urban counterparts. The Board of Directors is appreciative of the ongoing support from our community through donations and taxes. Even if the Hospital Board wanted to look towards increasing the hospital district tax rate, it cannot be increased since it is current at the highest rate allowable by state statute for district hospitals. The Board has been able to set aside $1.7 million but still needs an additional $1 million to complete the project with updated furnishings, including exam tables.
